Choosing the Right Security System

Are you a homeowner or a business owner in search of a security system? It can be overwhelming to choose the right one; you don’t want an expensive system that has more features than you realistically need. Conversely, you don’t want a bare-bones system that doesn’t give you the protection and peace of mind you need. This is comparable to a Goldilocks scenario, neither too many, nor too few, but just right. Let’s take a deeper look at different security systems and whom they benefit as well, as well as both advantages and disadvantages:

Unmonitored system – An unmonitored system does not connect to a central monitoring station. Instead. A loud alarm will blare inside and outside the house to alert you and neighbors to an intruder. If you’re not home, however, your neighbors would have to call the authorities in the event of a break in or fire. One advantage of an unmonitored system is that you won’t have to pay to connect to a monitoring station. A disadvantage, on the other hand, is that you will have to rely on your neighbors, which can be hard if they’re not always home or if they aren’t exactly proactive.

Monitored system – On the other end of the spectrum is a monitored system. This connects to a central monitoring station so, in the event of a break in for example, the agent will contact the authorities. One potential problem with this is that it connects to the station via outside telephone lines. If a burglar is savvy enough, s/he will know to cut the lines to break this connection. You can, however, opt to connect it through your cell phone to combat this issue. Another downside is that there is a delay between contacting the central monitoring station and the agent contacting authorities. It is also more expensive than other non-monitored alarm systems.

Wireless system – This is probably the most bare-bones system. You can buy one at most hardware stores and install it yourself. As it doesn’t connect to a monitoring station, you won’t have to pay any fees. You can also choose your preferred settings, such as a camera. However, because it’s a cheap, store-bought alarm, you may encounter problems such as a limited distance between the cameras and the sensors. Also, these systems require more frequent battery replacement, which can be inconvenient at the wrong time as well as expensive.
